Dorothy’s story of faith and hope

‘I am forever grateful for the food relief support that I got. This gave me a reason to smile again.’

Dorothy (Not her real name)receiving food relief during a food distribution activity in Naisoya Narok County

Dorothy a 62 years old grandmother living in Naisoya village in Narok County lost her son together with his wife some years back after struggling with chronic illnesses. She was left with three grandchildren aged 16, 12 and 6, to look after.  At her age, she depends on casual jobs mainly farming to meet her basic needs and those of her orphaned grandchildren.

Covid 19 Pandemic even made it much more difficult for families like hers who could not get the casual jobs since most people were seriously affected due to massive job losses. The community in Naisoya where Dorothy resides are agro-pastoralists and were seriously affected due to the closure of livestock and food markets. This trickled down to the casual laborer’s who depended on the farmers to earn their daily bread. Dorothy was not left out and it was so difficult for her to feed her grandchildren.

Yatima’s Interventions

Yatima/Orphan Outreach food relief program was the best news for Dorothy and other people in Naisoya community who were going through a difficult situation due to Covid 19 Outbreak. When the beneficiary’s selection committee sat to identify the most vulnerable households in the area, she qualified for the food relief support and was among the top people on the list of the beneficiaries. She benefited from the two rounds of food distribution, that included; maize, beans and rice. This relieved her of the stressful moments of thinking where the next meal would come from for two months. The second round of food distribution came just before Christmas and gave her reasons to smile and celebrate with the rest of the world! She is forever grateful to Yatima / Orphan Outreach for giving her reasons and moments to smile again
