Resilience in the face of Adversity .
The Story or Roseline, A Single Mother in Mathare Slums
Roseline is a single mother of 2 girls aged 13 years and 9 years old and are pupils at Patmos School. Roseline dropped out during her seconfd year of secondary school. She later attempted adult learning but this was not forthcoming due to increased responsibilities that come with parenthood. Tragically, Roseline’s first born fell ill during her exams in grade 8 snd developed paralysis. The doctors have been unable to diagnose her comdition or provide appropriate treatment and thus relies on a wheelchair for movement and only consume liquid food.
Roseline worked as a community health volunteer at a dispensary in Mathare earning a monthly salary of 130 USD. She however lost the job since she could not meet the demands of the job while taking care of her ailing daughter. To make ends meet, Roseline began washing clothes for her neighbours who would bring them to her house at a fee. Her Landlord understood her situation and allowed her to delay payements. Life became more unbearable for her when she could not find clothes to wash since her neighbours relied on casual jobs also and could not afford to pay her. Her church occasionally provided financial assistance, but she stopped going to church since her story could sometimes be used a testimony
Silc Group
Through Patmos School, she was able to join one of the SILC (Savings Internal & Lending Communities) groups. The groups consist of Patmos caregivers who save money collectively and lend to one another, charging small interest rates. After joining the group, she was elected to be the group’s treasurer since she enlightened and can support her group members in doing numerical calculations.
Roseline's Porridge Business
Through the SILC group, Roseline was able to save and took a loan worth 10 USD to start a small business of selling porridge to her neighbors in the morning and evening. This venture earns her 4.5 USD daily thus she s able to meet her financial needs at home such as food for her daughters, pay rent, and regain her independence without facing stigma or depending on well-wishers to support her.
Roseline's Daughter in School
The porridge business has not only given Roseline financial freedom to provide for her family but also enabled her to partially pay for her daughter’s education thus meeting her parental obligation at school without much difficulty as before. It is heartwarming to see the mother’s determination to provide her daughter with the best possible opportunities. we can only hope and pray that the daughter excells in her studies and realizes her full potential
